Discover Colonial Newport Inside & Out Walking Tour
Discover the remarkable story of early Newport on this stroll through Newport’s Historic Hill, including a visit inside one colonial landmark.

Tours on specialized subjects such as African-American heritage, colonial craftsmanship, religious diversity, women’s history, or holiday themes are available.

Behind-the-Scenes Tour of a “Doris Duke House”
Get a rare peek inside one of the Newport Restoration Foundation’s early houses ordinarily closed to the public. Learn about the history of the building and NRF’s unique approach to preservation. This program offered depending on availability.
Cost: $12 per person ($120 minimum; 15 people maximum)
Duration: one hour


History Detective Tour for Families, Youth Groups or Corporate Team-building
Students in grades 3-7 can discover Newport’s colonial history, its religious and racial diversity, its role in the American Revolution, and its remarkable architecture on an interactive guided tour. Students work in pairs to complete a worksheet, recording their observations in words and drawings.
Cost: $5 per student ($80 minimum)
Duration: one to one and one half hours

More Than Mansions Slide Show and Colony House Tour
What was Newport like before the Gilded Age and the Bellevue Avenue mansions?  Hear the whole story of Newport’s lively history during an illustrated presentation. Then tour this 1739 colonial landmark, a government meeting place & the site of important celebrations.

Great Friends Meeting House: Explore the state’s oldest house of worship (1699), where Quakers from throughout New England gathered to pray and discuss the issues of the day, including war, slavery, and women’s rights.

The Museum of Newport History: Housed in the 1762 Brick Market, exhibits here by the Newport Historical Society bring to life aspects of Newport’s history from the 1600s through the Gilded Age.  

Newport Colony House:  Experience the architectural elegance of the 1739 Colony House, a government meeting place & the site of celebrations, the Stamp Act riot, reading of the Declaration of Independence, & more.  

Redwood Library and Athenæum:  See the oldest lending library in America.  Completed in 1750, Redwood was designed by Peter Harrison, America's first true architect.  

Samuel Whitehorne House Museum:  Delve into a stunning collection of furniture that showcases Newport’s renowned craftsmanship.  Built by a wealthy merchant in 1811, this Federal style mansion now holds Doris Duke’s extensive collection of early Rhode Island furniture & decorative arts.   

Touro Synagogue:  The oldest synagogue surviving in North America, it is an architectural masterwork by Peter Harrison.  Hear the story of Newport's early Jewish community who lived side by side with their neighbors in an unusually tolerant community.

Trinity Church: Wonder at the beauty of this magnificent church that has been an icon of Newport’s landscape, as well as key facet of the city’s history, for more than 300 years.

 Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House:  Experience firsthand the story of this remarkable ca. 1697 home, and the notable individuals and furnishings that give it its place in American history.

DETAILS AND INFORMATION

Tour Capacity: Although some tours have limited capacity, we can accommodate large groups by combining two or more programs in succession.

Flexible Tour Departures: Walking tour departure options include the Gateway Visitors’ Center, hotels in Newport’s Historic Hill, the Museum of Newport History, or the Newport Colony House.

Parking & Restrooms: Complimentary bus parking and public restrooms are available at the Gateway Visitors’ Center at 23 America’s Cup Avenue; for directions and more information, see www.gonewport.com.

Accessibility: Some sites have limited access for wheelchairs & strollers. Call for information.

Payment: Prices subject to change. A nonrefundable deposit (typically $75) is due at least 14 days before the tour date; balance is due upon arrival. Payment may be made by check, cash, money order, Visa, or MasterCard.

Escort Admissions: Admission is complimentary for one group leader & one driver with each tour group.

Late Arrivals: Tour guides will accommodate late arriving groups whenever possible, but tours may have to be shortened or cancelled in some instances.
